It’s easy for a small business web site to fail — make sure you do these two things
♫ Tuesday, October 16th, 2007Do you own a medium-sized business? When you come to design a web site then, you need a specialist web designer for small business. He will appreciate your need for a site that informs and attracts the visitor.
Your clients will understand your small business web site is efficient if it performs two things for your visitor. First, it communicates that your business is up to standard and well run — because the site is both. Also, it quickly shows the visitor how to find the thing he wants — because the layout and navigation is obvious and easy to use.
Bigger companies with enviable budgets for the Internet and other advertising can get web sites that do both by using well paid design teams and consultants with offices in the upmarket sectors of the city. But a small business doesn’t have this money and must do some basic thinking about design itself.
Here’s two things to talk about with the less expensive web designer you will use.
1. Do you know those little ‘tv shows’ that display in some Internet ads, and sometimes take over the whole home page of a site? Look stunning, don’t they! This is flash. But if you want to code up some flash you must realise the search engines won’t be able to read these dazzling movies. Search engines use the words on your site and the links pointing to it, to decide what your site concentrates on. So when you must use flash make doubly sure you’ve got lots of words about your company and your market sector on your important pages. Also, get your designer to keep the flash movies little. Flash sometimes uses large amounts of bandwidth which will force your site to load slowly. People get irritated over pages that are slow to load. So be hesitant to use these movies.
2. Your second point for discussion is similar. Graphics on your site are great. They add color and they can help direct the visitor’s eye to the areas you want him to see quickly. But graphics can also be too big, and if there are too many big ones you will end up with a slow-loading page. Instruct the designer to make sure his pictures use very little bandwidth.
So, that’s two easy things you can watch for to make your small business site give your visitor the experience he expects. Act on them and your site’s effectiveness will compare well with big companies and their costly web sites.
